Moses Springs

Oyun Musa / Nile Valley / Cairo
While heading to Sinai from Suez and after exiting the Ahmed Helmi tunnel, drive a few kilometers south to reach Oyun Musa, a small oasis that is named after the underground water springs that flow under its sands. Nowadays, seven of the original twelve still exist.

Meaning Moses Springs, Oyun Musa is home to the bitter water sources at which Moses is believed to have stopped while leading the Israelites in their escape of the Pharaoh's wrath. According to the Bible, after three days of travelling in the desert without water, Moses and his community found a spring but its water was too bitter to drink. After supplicating God for a solution, Moses was told to throw a piece of wood into the water to make it drinkable.

The water from the sources in Oyun Musa is believed by locals to have various healing properties. When driving or walking through the Bedouin settlement to get to the source, Bedouin children will tell you everything they know and/or believe about their springs.

Cleopatra's Pool / Western Desert / Siwa Oasis
One of the most famous attractions in Siwa is Cleopatra's pool, a stone pool fed by a natural hot spring, where the Egyptian queen herself is said to have swam on her visit to Siwa. Tourists have all been doing the same for years now; after all, a nice swim is so refreshing after a hot summer day tour.

You will find a cabin nearby where you can change into your bathing suit but bear in mind that women should give more thought to their swimming attire; the local men aren't used to the sight of a woman in a swimsuit. A tee-shirt is advised.

Bir Sigam Hot Spring / Western Desert / Bahariya Oasis
Soak in the heat at Bir Sigam, a hot spring that can help overcome rheumatism. Located at 7 km east of Bahariya on the Cairo road, the spring is usually crowded in the day but empty at night.

Bir Sitta Hot Springs / Western Desert / Farafra Oasis
Take to the hot springs after a hard safari through the White Desert. Bir Sitta helps relieve back pain and joint ache after camel riding. The large hot bath contains traces of sulfur, which is said to aid muscle and joint recovery. It is about 5 kilometers from the main town and easy to reach by car.

Bir Al-Gebel Hot Spring / Western Desert / Dakhla Oasis
Chill under the shade of a palm tree with a view on the surrounding dunes and desert cliffs after a dip in Bir Gebel. Located some 25 km north of Mut, it is probably the most stunning spring in the Western Desert oases. Try going there in the evening when it's less crowded.

Mut Talata Hot Springs / Western Desert / Dakhla Oasis
Go for a dip in the rust coloured hot sulphur springs of Mut Talata. The water is hot indeed, and very relaxing. No need to dress up! The rusty water might stain anything you're wearing.

Boulaq and Nasser Springs / Western Desert / Kharga Oasis
About 20 kilometres south of Kharga Oasis, are located the villages of Ezbet Nasser (Nasser Village) and Bulaq, two mini-oases widely known for their natural hot springs. In fact, the water temperature in these springs rises to a high of 43 degrees Celsius. Such waters are believed to be very helpful in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, and various skin allergies and diseases. But even perfectly healthy visitors and locals alike enjoy a dip in the springs, especially after a long day of sightseeing in the desert nearby.
